Door installation
Can you supply the door, or do I need to buy it?
Either. We can supply the door, frame and hardware, or install a door you've already bought. If you supply it, we'll check the size and handing before the install day so there are no surprises.
How long does a door installation take?
A prehung interior door usually takes a few hours. An exterior door with trim, insulation and sealing usually takes most of a day. Commercial openings depend on the frame and hardware, and we'll give you a schedule with the quote.
Do you install fire-rated doors?
Yes. We install labelled fire-rated doors, frames and hardware so the assembly keeps its rating, and we can replace non-compliant hardware on existing fire doors.
Automatic doors
Do you supply and install new automatic doors?
Yes. We supply and install complete automatic sliding and swing entrances, and we add operators to existing doors when the door and frame are in good shape.
How often should an automatic door be serviced?
Busy entrances should have a safety check and service at least once a year, and more often for high-traffic doors. Check the manufacturer's guidance for your operator. We can set up a maintenance schedule that fits your traffic.
Can you add an automatic opener to our existing door?
Usually, yes. Most swing doors in good condition can take a low-energy operator and push buttons. We check the door weight, hinges, frame and lock first, since an electrified lock or strike may be needed so the door can open on its own.
Do you repair brands you didn't install?
Yes. We work on operators and sensors from the major manufacturers, whoever installed them.
Commercial doors
Do you work on storefront doors?
Yes. We repair and replace aluminum storefront doors and their hardware, including pivots, continuous hinges, closers, Adams Rite-style deadlocks and push/pull hardware.
Can you look after all the doors in our buildings?
Yes. We can set up planned maintenance for one building or many, and keep a record of each opening and its hardware so repairs are faster.
Our fire door doesn't close on its own. Is that urgent?
Yes. A fire door has to close and latch by itself to do its job. We'll adjust or replace the closer, hinges or latch so it does.
Door hardware
Which hardware brands do you install?
We are an authorized dealer for the major commercial brands and install them all, including Allegion (Schlage, LCN, Von Duprin, Falcon, Ives), ASSA ABLOY (Sargent, Corbin Russwin, Norton Rixson, Medeco, Abloy, Yale, Pemko), dormakaba and BEST, Hager and others.
Can you match the hardware we already have?
Usually, yes. Send us photos of the hardware and any markings on it, and we'll source matching or compatible parts.
Can you work from a door hardware schedule?
Yes. We can supply and install from the schedule on your drawings, or suggest substitutions when something has a long lead time.
Access control & electronic locks
Which access control systems do you work with?
We install and service the major platforms, including HID, Salto, Keyscan, Kantech, Paxton, Brivo, Genetec, LenelS2, Avigilon Alta and Verkada, plus Schlage and ASSA ABLOY electronic locks. If you already have a system, we'll work with it.
Do I need wiring to every door?
Not always. Wireless electronic locks connect to the system without a cable to each door. Hardwired readers and strikes are usually better for main entrances and high-traffic doors.
What happens if the power goes out?
That depends on the hardware. Fail-secure locks stay locked and still let people out from the inside; fail-safe hardware unlocks. We help you choose the right setup for each door and the fire and building codes that apply to it.
Can access control work with our automatic doors?
Yes. We can tie readers and electrified locks into automatic operators so an authorized credential unlocks and opens the door in one step.
Accessible washroom door kits
What's in an accessible washroom locking kit?
Usually a low-energy door operator, an outside push button, an inside lock button, an electric strike or electrified lock, an occupied light or sign, and a way for staff to override the lock in an emergency.
Can you add a kit to our existing washroom door?
In most cases, yes. We check that the door, frame and hinges can take an operator, and that there's a power source nearby.
Will the kit meet code?
We design each installation around the barrier-free requirements that apply to your building and confirm the details with your designer or inspector when needed. Requirements vary by building type and municipality, so we check before we quote.
Traka key management
What is Traka?
Traka is a key and asset management company that is part of ASSA ABLOY. Its intelligent cabinets and lockers release keys and equipment only to authorized users and keep a record of every transaction.
Who uses key management systems?
Property managers, fleets, hospitals, schools, hotels, retailers, industrial sites and any building where keys are shared between shifts or staff.
Can Traka use our existing access cards?
In many cases, yes. Traka cabinets can be set up with card readers that match common access credentials, and some access control systems can share users with Traka. We check compatibility before we quote.
Perimeter detection systems
What kind of sites need perimeter detection?
Equipment and fleet yards, industrial and oilfield sites, utilities, storage facilities, construction sites and any property with valuable assets outside the building.
Will wind, snow and animals set off false alarms?
Good systems are tuned to the site and use zoning and filtering to tell the difference between weather, small animals and a person. We test and adjust after installation and through the seasons.
Can it work with our cameras and access control?
Yes. Most perimeter systems can trigger cameras, lights and alerts, and connect to access control or a monitoring centre.
Automatic vehicle gates
What safety devices does an automatic gate need?
Gate operators should be listed to the safety standard for gate operators (UL 325 in North America, with CSA C22.2 No. 247 covering operators in Canada) and installed with entrapment protection such as photo eyes and edge sensors. We install and test these with every gate.
Can the gate work with our access cards?
Yes. We can connect gates to card readers, keypads, intercoms, remotes and licence plate recognition, and to the same access control system as your doors.
Will the gate work in winter?
Yes, when it's set up for it. We choose operators and settings suited to cold weather and keep tracks and safety devices clear of ice and snow.
Turnstiles & pedestrian gates
Do turnstiles meet accessibility requirements?
Turnstiles themselves usually aren't accessible, so an accessible wide-lane gate or door is installed beside them. We plan that into the layout from the start.
What happens in a fire alarm?
Turnstiles can be connected to the fire alarm so they release for free exit, and the layout has to keep required exits clear. We confirm the details with your designer and the local authority.
Can turnstiles use our existing access cards?
Usually, yes. Turnstiles take standard readers, so they can use the same cards, fobs or mobile credentials as your doors.
Entry doors
Should I repair my entry door or replace it?
Repair makes sense when the slab is solid and the trouble is the hinges, latch, weatherstripping or alignment. Replacement is usually the better spend when the door is rotted, delaminating or warped, or the glass seal has failed.
Can you replace an entry door in winter?
Yes. The old door stays in until the new one is ready to set, so the opening is only exposed briefly. We insulate the gap and use sealants rated for cold-weather application.
What size is my entry door?
Most entry doors are 36 inches wide and 80 inches tall, but older and custom homes vary. Our measuring guide shows you what to measure, and we always re-measure on site.
Interior doors
Can you hang a new door in my existing frame?
Yes. We can fit and hinge a new slab to your existing frame, matching the hinge and latch locations, or install a full prehung unit if the frame is damaged.
Why does my door swing open by itself?
Usually the frame isn't plumb or a hinge has loosened. We can re-shim the frame, tighten or replace hinges, or adjust the hinge pins so the door stays where you leave it.
Is solid-core worth it?
For bedrooms, bathrooms and home offices, solid-core doors block noticeably more sound and feel more substantial. For closets, hollow-core is usually fine.
Garage doors
Is a broken garage door spring an emergency?
Don't try to open the door by hand or with the opener when a spring is broken. The door is far heavier without the spring helping. Leave it closed and call us.
How long do garage door springs last?
Standard springs are typically rated for around 10,000 cycles, so a door used several times a day can need new springs within several years. Higher-cycle springs last longer.
Can you insulate my existing garage door?
We can replace worn bottom and perimeter seals, which helps a lot with drafts. For real insulation value, a new insulated door is usually the better choice.
Locks & rekeying
Should I rekey or replace my locks?
If the locks work well and you just want old keys to stop working, rekeying is the quicker, cheaper choice. Replace them when they're worn, low-grade or you want a different style or security level.
Can you set up a master key system?
Yes. We plan the keying so each person has access to the doors they need, and leave room for the system to grow.
What makes a lock high security?
Patented, restricted keyways that can't be copied without authorization, plus cylinders built to resist picking, bumping and drilling. Medeco and Abloy are two well-known examples.
