  • Smart and keypad locks

Overview

Locks & rekeying, done properly

A lock that's hard to turn or doesn't line up with its strike usually isn't a lock problem. It's a door problem. Because we fix doors, we can get the door, frame and lock working together, so the deadbolt throws fully and the latch catches every time.

For businesses and multi-unit buildings we design and install master key systems, restricted and high-security keyways such as Medeco and Abloy, and interchangeable cores so you can change locks without changing hardware.

When to call

Signs you need us

  • You've moved in, or a tenant or employee has left
  • The key is stiff or hard to turn
  • The deadbolt won't throw unless you push the door
  • You have too many keys for too many doors
  • You want to control who can copy keys

What we cover

Every job is different. These are the kinds of locks & rekeying work we do most.

Rekeying

New pins in your existing locks so old keys stop working. Faster and cheaper than replacing hardware.

Master keying

One key for managers and limited keys for everyone else, planned so the system can grow.

High security

Restricted and high-security cylinders from brands like Medeco and Abloy that resist picking and unauthorized key copying.

Barrier-free requirements in Alberta

Alberta uses the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, in force since May 1, 2024. Its accessibility requirements are in Section 3.8, Accessibility. Here's what it means for doors.

Door hardwareSentence 3.8.3.6.(4) and Clause 3.8.3.8.(1)(b)
Handles, latches and locks must be mounted 900 to 1 100 mm above the floor and work with one hand in a closed fist, without tight grasping or twisting. In practice that means levers, push/pull hardware or panic bars rather than knobs.
Opening forceSentence 3.8.3.6.(8)
Without a power operator, an unlatched door must open with no more than 38 N for an exterior swing door and 22 N for an interior swing or sliding door. Closers have to be adjusted to meet this.
Clear widthSentence 3.8.3.6.(2)
Doorways on a barrier-free path need a clear width of at least 850 mm with the door open.

This is a plain-language summary, not the code itself. Requirements depend on the building's occupancy, size and whether the work is new construction or an alteration. Confirm them with your designer and the local authority having jurisdiction. More on barrier-free code.

Questions we hear a lot

Should I rekey or replace my locks?

If the locks work well and you just want old keys to stop working, rekeying is the quicker, cheaper choice. Replace them when they're worn, low-grade or you want a different style or security level.

Can you set up a master key system?

Yes. We plan the keying so each person has access to the doors they need, and leave room for the system to grow.

What makes a lock high security?

Patented, restricted keyways that can't be copied without authorization, plus cylinders built to resist picking, bumping and drilling. Medeco and Abloy are two well-known examples.
