Overview

Commercial doors, done properly

Commercial doors take abuse that a house door never sees: carts, deliveries, wind, and hundreds of cycles a day. When one fails, it's usually a security or fire-safety problem as well as an inconvenience. We fix what's worth fixing and replace what isn't, with hardware rated for the traffic.

We work with property managers, general contractors and business owners across Alberta, on single repairs or across a whole portfolio of buildings.

When to call

Signs you need us

  • The door drags, sags or won't latch
  • The closer slams the door or doesn't pull it shut
  • Panic hardware sticks or doesn't release
  • A fire door won't close and latch on its own
  • The frame is bent from impact or a break-in

What we cover

Every job is different. These are the kinds of commercial doors work we do most.

Hollow metal

Steel doors and frames for back doors, stairwells, service rooms and corridors, installed and repaired.

Storefront

Aluminum and glass entrance doors, with pivots, continuous hinges, offset arms, deadlocks and push/pull hardware.

Fire-rated

Labelled assemblies and hardware that close and latch on their own, so the opening keeps its rating.

Barrier-free requirements in Alberta

Alberta uses the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, in force since May 1, 2024. Its accessibility requirements are in Section 3.8, Accessibility. Here's what it means for doors.

Door hardwareSentence 3.8.3.6.(4) and Clause 3.8.3.8.(1)(b)
Handles, latches and locks must be mounted 900 to 1 100 mm above the floor and work with one hand in a closed fist, without tight grasping or twisting. In practice that means levers, push/pull hardware or panic bars rather than knobs.
Opening forceSentence 3.8.3.6.(8)
Without a power operator, an unlatched door must open with no more than 38 N for an exterior swing door and 22 N for an interior swing or sliding door. Closers have to be adjusted to meet this.
Clear widthSentence 3.8.3.6.(2)
Doorways on a barrier-free path need a clear width of at least 850 mm with the door open.

This is a plain-language summary, not the code itself. Requirements depend on the building's occupancy, size and whether the work is new construction or an alteration. Confirm them with your designer and the local authority having jurisdiction. More on barrier-free code.

  4. Step 4

    We install and test

We adjust until it closes, latches, locks and opens the way it should, then clean up before we leave.

Questions we hear a lot

Do you work on storefront doors?

Yes. We repair and replace aluminum storefront doors and their hardware, including pivots, continuous hinges, closers, Adams Rite-style deadlocks and push/pull hardware.

Can you look after all the doors in our buildings?

Yes. We can set up planned maintenance for one building or many, and keep a record of each opening and its hardware so repairs are faster.

Our fire door doesn't close on its own. Is that urgent?

Yes. A fire door has to close and latch by itself to do its job. We'll adjust or replace the closer, hinges or latch so it does.
