Door closers: what to know
A closer has to do two jobs that pull against each other: shut the door firmly enough to latch against wind and air pressure, and gently enough that it's easy to open and doesn't catch anyone. Getting that right means choosing the right size and arm for the door, then adjusting the sweep, latch speed and backcheck.
Cold matters too. Hydraulic fluid thickens in the cold, so a closer adjusted in July can be sluggish in January. We set closers up for year-round conditions and recommend all-weather models for exterior doors.
On barrier-free routes, interior closers are adjusted for low opening force and a slow enough closing speed, as the Alberta Building Code requires.
